Lanaken lies in the extreme south of the Meuse border area, in the shadow of the city of Maastricht. With its central location, Lanaken is the
ideal base to go shopping in the shopping's paradise of Maastricht, Hasselt, Genk or Maasmechelen. Go and say hello to Ambiorix in Tongeren, or
pay a visit to the "Bokrijk" open air museum. In half an hour you can both reach Liège or Aachen. The motorway also provides an easy access to
the Ardennes.
If want to explore the surroundings in an adventurous way, you can do so with a kayak! Kajak Maasland offers complete (day) trips on the Meuse
border. This river forms the natural border between the provinces of Belgian Limburg and Dutch Limburg and follows its original bed for
centuries. The Meuse has many "rapids" (faster portions) which make it a beautiful sailing trip. The important thing is that you can determine
your own pace, while the average length of this route varies between 3 and 4 hours. This route is very quiet, as it has no shipping and no
locks. You will be "sailing" between meadows, fields and friendly villages. Put your kayak ashore and have up a picnic on both Dutch and
Belgian banks. With a one-, two- or three-persons kayak, you can choose a route of 21 km (takes about 4 h) or another of 11 km (approximately 2
hours).
